GROOMING TIPS
![]()
Grooming is a must for a Yorkshire Terrier. If you start at an early stage in life very young it is eaisier on both you and your yorkie. Get him or her use to the water shampoo and dryer and brushing and combing. They really love to be pampered. On the other hand you can also have your Yorkshire cut in what is called a puppy cut for eaiser brushing and bathing.

I love to keep my Yorkshires coat long because I love to groom and brush them it is a bonding time for just me and them. I do however trim the coats on the under belly of expectant mothers just before they have their offspring.
It takes about six months or more for the yorkie puppy's hair to grow long. Use a good shampoo and conditioner with weekly grooming to prevent matting and tangleing of the hair. With grooming and brushing the hair becomes straighter and silky.
The best thing is the yorkshire terrier is a non-shedding dog, so no hair on the furniture or bedding to clean up.
The best way I have found to keep your yorkshires hair beautiful is by daily combing. This can be done as you watch your faviorte TV show. If the hair becomes tangled just wet the tangle and work fingertips through or use a comb. Do not use shampoo as a daily wash because this may irritate the dogs skin. I usually bath once a week. Remove the mucus from the corners of the eyes daily if any is present. Use a wet cotton ball or soft rag for this, If left undone it may rot the hair under the eye. Because of the different ph in dogs and humans hair, use a good dog shampoo, not human shampoo. Be sure to rinse the dog thoroughly to remove all products that may irritate the skin. Be sure not to have the dryer to hot or to close to your yorkie for this could cause burn to his skin. I keep a small spray bottle with watered down conditioner to help with daily grooming so that the hair will break less. Care of the yorkshire terriers hair is a big part of having one as your campion, but it is not overwhelming, and it should not dominate your day. Be sure to have all your supplies at hand, never walk away and leave your yorkie unattended, because they are very fast and could jump down and serious injury could happen. However if the long hair is not for you just have a puppy cut, whichever, he is still the same beautiful companion. A few minutes daily keeps the coat clean, silky, and shiny.
